Burning the Midnight Owl

Fancy burning the midnight Owl! When I have some free time, or need a break from work, I turn to my home and find plenty to keep me busy. This owl lampshade was formerly a standard bedside lamp shade that had fallen and gotten a deep dent. I couldn’t repair the puncture, so I had to toss it. To replace the shade I got the following materials from around my home…

  • A 2 Litre milk bottle
  • Fancy paper
  • some small dried branches from the garden
  • wire
  • tape
  • the lamp stand
  • and mixed in some creative thinking.

That was everything I needed to create this Owl Lampshade. Creating custom designs is often difficult to repeat. But the basic idea was to cut off the top of the bottle, and cut a hole in the base of it. Then I inserted the lampshade under it and through the hole. I measured the cardboard around the bottle and then proceeded to draw the owl. Using a pen-knife I cut out the sections I wanted the light to shine from. I used lovely transparent colour paper to fill in. With the waste top of the bottle, I cut flower shapes. The leaves were made with both plastic from the bottle top and colour pape.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you have useful junk lying around? I hope this inspires some ideas! I’d love to see too, so please share!
