A Work In Progress

If you thought you must dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’ the first time with your website, then you are being too hard on yourself. Unlike printed material, websites are not fixed. They are ever evolving at the pace of you, your business or services, and therefore, simply a work in progress. Here are some points that can help you lighten the burden of developing your website…

1) Know what you want
Sometimes communicating thoughts or ideas, can be a challenge for some. If you are one of those people who can communicate what you don’t want, more easily than what you do want, then it is a good idea for you to pause for a moment to consider your project from a different perspective. To design your website properly you must know what you want, why, and who it is for, before you design and build your website or produce any of its content.

2) Ask Questions
Viewing other designs and questioning why something works or why it doesn’t work, can be key to help you make better decisions about your project, helping you identify what to want. This is positive progress. Knowing what you don’t want without knowing why, can be non-progressive – you could easily not like a hundred things and accomplish nothing. Knowing what you like and sticking to it, requires a certain amount of confidence gained from the experience of researching in light of your own project.

3) Don’t be hasty
To achieve the best results with your website, start to write and publish simple factual content. You can build on this as you require. In this way you can quickly publish content on your site and get the wheels turning in your direction sooner. Keep things in perspective and allow yourself the room to grow.

4) Simplify
Today, with easy access to information, people are bombarded by all kinds of communications. Keep your message simple and digestible. Know your target audience and you’ll be able to plan a better website and write better content.

5) Failing to plan is planning to fail
Planning takes time. Be prepared to spend as much time as you need to plan, but let it be constructive planning. It is easy to shift the goal post and not do anything at all as we aim for perfect results. Have a plan and begin the groundwork to get the wheels turning in the direction you want to go.

Perfection is a great standard to achieve and is very rarely achieved on first attempt. Be prepared for a good amount of trying, testing and failing along the way.
